Is it time for Rangers rising star to break through?

Is it time for Robby McCrorie to get more of a shot? That’s the question we’d wonder with Allan McGregor’s advancing years edging him towards retirement and McCrorie surely being his successor.

McGregor, of course, is a legend for this club, and what he did in the past not to mention 55 will never be forgotten, but it’s been subtly noticeable that his form hasn’t been at the level this year he’d have wanted, and it’s not unfair to give the old fella a rest.

As much as Jon McLaughlin has done a decent job as deputy, he isn’t the future of the club while McCrorie clearly is.

The 23-year old impressed hugely v Alashkert then Celtic but since then hasn’t featured at all and we reckon it would be good to see him getting more matches.

It’s nothing against Greegsy or McLaughlin but they’re not the future any more, while McCrorie has every chance of following in the number one’s footsteps.

He will only learn by playing, by getting those minutes, and as the chances of McGregor’s retirement increase, so does McCrorie’s place in the team.

Of course, there’s a big caveat – the Champions League.

Next season, all being well, Rangers will be in the group stage – and we can’t help wondering of McGregor will want one last crack at that too before completely calling it a day.

But then is that unfair if he isn’t at his best any more?

We’re not the ones to ask.

What we would say is we would like to see McCrorie get more chances this season, and we doubt we’re alone on that.
