McClean, a stalwart presence in the Irish national team for over a decade, announced his decision through a heartfelt social media post.

With 102 caps and 11 goals, McClean’s international career will conclude after the November international break.

His last appearance in the iconic green jersey will take place during the friendly match against New Zealand, scheduled for next month at the Aviva Stadium.

In his emotional social media post, McClean expressed gratitude and nostalgia for his time representing Ireland.

He recalled his debut in 2012 and the indescribable feeling of pride that came with it.

McClean acknowledged the highs and lows of his journey, which included participating in two European Championships and giving his all on the pitch.

Addressing his decision, he stated: “I have come to a point, one that truth be told, you never think is going to come, but here we are, where I am announcing my retirement from international football at the end of the 2023 season.”

He highlighted the upcoming New Zealand match as the perfect opportunity to say goodbye to the devoted Irish fans.

Throughout his career, McClean weathered debates and challenges, including criticism for his move from Wigan Athletic to Wrexham AFC, which saw him playing in England’s League Two.

Despite doubts, he defended his choices and continued to represent Ireland with pride.

McClean expressed heartfelt gratitude to the various Irish managers who entrusted him with the green jersey — Giovanni Trapattoni, Martin O’Neill, Mick McCarthy, and Stephen Kenny.

He also thanked his teammates, coaching staff, fans, and wife for their unwavering support.

Ireland manager Stephen Kenny will announce the squad for the upcoming 2024 European Championship qualifiers against Greece and Gibraltar later today.
