The fixture was also the first since the contentious departure of head coach Vera Pauw after the World Cup, with former assistant Eileen Gleeson taking over on an interim basis.

And she was celebrating after half an hour when a first-time long range effort from Lucy Quinn found the back of the net.

Another was cleared off the line before half-time for the Girls in Green, who were denied in the same circumstances after the interval by Demi Vance before they finally got the goal they deserved.

A mix-up at the back for the visitors saw Kyra Carusa gifted possession and she found the net from 25 yards.

Substitute Lily Agg’s late header wrapped up the win in front of a crowd of 35,994 – a record for a Republic of Ireland WNT home fixture.

Next up for the victors on Tuesday is a trip to Hungary.
