Ipswich Town will not be pursuing a move for Jermain Defoe, according to a report from the East Anglian Daily Times.

Defoe recently left Scottish Premiership side Rangers following a three-year stint at the club and has since become the subject of a great deal of transfer speculation.

A report from iNews earlier this month suggested that Sunderland were interested in securing a reunion with the forward.

Meanwhile, a separate report from Sky Sports today named Oxford United, Charlton Athletic and Ipswich as potential suitors for Defoe.

However, as per the East Anglian Daily Times, Defoe is not believed to be on Ipswich’s radar due to the fact the club are already able to call upon the services of Macauley Bonne, James Norwood, Joe Pigott and Kayden Jackson.

Before calling time on his stint at Ibrox, the forward was used sparingly by Rangers during the first half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Due to the presence of Alfredo Morelos, Fashion Sakala and Kemar Roofe, Defoe only made two appearances for the club.

Whilst Ipswich will not be making a move for the forward, he could end up in League One if one of the other aforementioned sides opt to hand him a deal.

The Verdict

When you consider that Ipswich are not exactly short of attacking options, it is hardly a surprise that they are not pursuing Defoe.

Although the forward has demonstrated throughout his career that he is capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis, he may struggle to cope with the demands of League One at the age of 39.

Furthermore, given that Bonne and Norwood have scored a combined total of 16 goals this season, Defoe may not necessarily have been an upgrade on this particular duo.

Currently eight points adrift of the play-off places, Ipswich could decide to bolster their options in other areas before the window closes in order to boost their chances of securing a top-six finish.

The Tractor Boys may potentially be in the market for a new central-defender following Toto Nsiala’s recent switch to Fleetwood Town.
