Ipswich Town set to sign Jeremy Sarmiento

Brighton's Jeremy Sarmiento spent the first half of the 2023-24 campaign on loan at West Brom, and started seven Championship games at the Baggies, appearing off the substitute's bench a further 13 times as he scored on two occasions.

The 21-year-old Ecuador international now looks set to join Ipswich Town as Kieran McKenna looks to bolster his squad, as the Tractor Boys push for promotion to the Premier League.

Sarmiento joined the Seagulls from Portuguese outfit Benfica in 2021, and made 19 appearances for the south coast side before joining the Baggies on loan at the start of the campaign.

The ace's parent club recalled him on Monday, and now look set to offload him again, as the Tractor Boys will look to benefit from the attacking midfielder's services.

wrote on X: "ATTENTION: Jeremy Sarmiento will arrive at Ipswich Town Football Club.

"Brighton interrupted Jeremy Sarmiento's loan due to the few minutes he has had with West Brom.

"The Ecuadorian continues to be one of Brighton's big projects for the future, which is why they have already agreed on a new loan.

"In the next few hours they will announce that Sarmiento will play 6 months for Ipswich Town, who are second in the EFL Championship.

"If they achieve promotion to the Premier League, the loan can be extended for another year, otherwise Jeremy will return to Brighton in June."

This agreement bodes well for the Tractor Boys

Although Sarmiento did not play as many minutes for the Baggies as he, or parent club Brighton would have liked, he is a young player with plenty of promise.

As the second half of the Championship campaign is underway, every game is crucial, especially for a Tractor Boys side who are pushing for a second consecutive promotion.

During the business end of the season, fixture congestion is rife, so Sarmiento's signature could prove to be a stroke of genius from McKenna who looks to have brought yet another quality player to Portman Road.

The fact that Sarmiento scored two goals, having made just seven starts for Carlos Corberan's Albion, arguably shows in itself that the Ecuador international is a dangerous player for the Tractor Boys to have at their disposal.

When picked in the starting lineup, Sarmiento is a player who can win his side a match, as demonstrated by the goal he scored in the Baggies' 1-0 win over Cardiff City back in November.

McKenna's future planning is welcome news for Ipswich fans

As per Flores' report on X, should the Tractor Boys earn promotion to the top-flight, they can then keep Sarmiento in East Anglia for another whole season, which is a prospect the Portman Road faithful should be excited about.

This agreement is a big statement by the Tractor Boys, and demonstrates the ever-impressive ambition of McKenna and co who were only promoted from League One last campaign.

If McKenna's side replicate the success of the first half of the campaign, in the second half of the season and turn a once unlikely promotion into reality, then they will need all the help they can get to achieve subsequent Premier League survival.

Of course, there is a long way to go until the Tractor Boys squad can start to think about that, with Championship fixtures coming thick and fast, but the fact Brighton seemingly wish to retain their man in the long term perhaps shows he could provide the goods in the top-flight.
