Ipswich Town scored a contender for the cheekiest goal of the 2021-22 season at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon.

Dennis Adeniran must have thought his first-half goal had sealed all three points for the visitors at Portman Road.

Conor Chaplin’s dramatic late equaliser, however, snatched a draw for the hosts.

But Ipswich’s goal was all thanks to forward Macauley Bonne, who caught Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell totally off guard.

Peacock-Farrell gathered the ball after Bonne had kept it in play but inexplicably forgot that Ipswich’s No. 18 was behind him.

Bonne, sensing this was the case, snuck up behind the visitors’ goalkeeper while Ipswich’s fans stayed as quiet as possible.

As Peacock-Farrell rolled the ball out to himself to waste a few more seconds, Bonne took his chance and won possession.

The angle was too tight to shoot, so Bonne rolled the ball back to Scott Fraser, who teed up Chaplin to finish from close-range.

Peacock-Farrell’s reaction said it all. He was devastated after his howler cost his side two valuable points.

Darren Moore defends Peacock-Farrell

Full marks to Bonne for his quick thinking but what was Peacock-Farrell playing at?

The Northern Ireland international, who is on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Burnley, was defended by his manager Darren Moore after the final whistle.

Asked whether he will stick with Peacock-Farrell, Moore was quoted by The Star as saying: “Let me just slash that down… He’s fine for us, is Bailey. He’s a top, top goalkeeper who will be ready for Tuesday. You don’t even have to ask me for Tuesday, he’ll be ready to go again.

“He’s solid, he’s a Premier League goalkeeper. And his performances have been spot on – so for those looking for negatives, as a manager it’s my place to reiterate that the positives have outweighed the negatives. Look at the first couple of minutes, he saved a one-on-one.

“He’s fine, and I’ll echo that for myself and on behalf of the players… I’ve not got a problem. He’s been superb for us.”
