Ipswich Town man sends clear message to teammates about League One promotion race

Ipswich Town defender George Edmundson has insisted his side cannot get ahead of themselves in the battle for promotion from League One.

After an underwhelming 11th place finish in the third-tier standings last season, the Tractor Boys have been much improved so far this time around.

Kieran McKenna’s side currently sit second in the League One table, with 30 points from 13 league games, meaning they are already four points clear of the play-off places.

Edmundson has played an important role in that, appearing in ten league games this season, and scoring once in their 2-1 win at Morecambe last time out.

But despite that, it seems the 25-year-old is determined to ensure his side remain focused on the immediate task of the next game on the schedule, rather than thinking about where they are in the table.

Speaking to the EADT about the importance to Ipswich of not getting carried away, Edmundson said: “We’ve given ourselves a great platform, but it’s a marathon not a sprint.

“Ipswich have been in this position before, in previous years, and it’s not gone the way they wanted.

“I know you’ve heard this loads, and the fans have heard it, but you’ve just got to take it one game at time.

“I know that’s a boring cliché thing to say, but it’s what you’ve got to do in League One. You start getting too far ahead of yourselves and that’s when you start falling away and you crumble.”

FIRST MATCH OF THE SEASON WAS AGAINST?

BOLTON FOREST GREEN

Ipswich’s next game sees them host 18th placed Lincoln City at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Verdict

This does feel like the right approach for Edmundson and Ipswich to take at this stage of the season.

It has been an excellent start to the campaign for the Tractor Boys, but there is still a huge amount of time in which the clubs behind them easily overhaul that points deficit.

Focusing too much on promotion could create the sort of distraction that allows errors to creep into their game, and gives those sides the opportunity to take advantage of any slip-up at Portman Road.

Indeed, if Ipswich continue to play as they have done so far this season for the rest of the campaign, it could be argued that the issue of promotion will simply take care of itself.
