The Tractor Boys could be about to raid their Championship rivals in a bid to bolster their attacking unit
Ipswich Town have submitted a transfer offer to Championship rivals Leicester City for Kasey McAteer.
The Tractor Boys have had somewhat of an underwhelming start to life back in the Championship, drawing 1-1 to both Birmingham City and Southampton in their opening two fixtures.
Kieran McKenna is looking to strengthen in the final third before the September 1 transfer deadline despite having a wealth of talent at his disposal, and it looks as though he wants to add a player from a club that also came down with the Suffolk side from the Premier League last season.
As reported by John Percy of The Telegraph, the Tractor Boys have made an undisclosed bid for Republic of Ireland international Kasey McAteer, with no indication as to whether it has been accepted or rejected yet by Leicester.
The 23-year-old made a big impact for City when they won the Championship title in 2023-24, scoring six times in 23 appearances despite spending multiple periods of the campaign on the sidelines through injuries.
McAteer, who can play off either flank, appeared just 18 times in the Premier League last season though as Leicester dropped straight back into the Championship, where he has come off the bench of the Foxes' opening two matches for brief cameos.
Ipswich have made their move though, and it remains to be seen if Leicester will accept an offer for McAteer or if they will snub it.
McAteer is not the only winger that Ipswich have been linked with in the past week, with reports in Denmark suggesting that Town were eyeing up an Omari Hutchinson replacement in the form of Nordsjaelland teenager Sindre Walle Egeli, who scored nine times in the Danish Superliga last season and would cost in the region of £17.3 million if a deal were to be done.
That particular deal remains in the balance, but with McAteer also a target, Ipswich could soon become very much overpopulated in the wide areas of the pitch.
Jaden Philogene, Jack Clarke, Sammie Szmodics, Chiedozie Ogbene and the sidelined Wes Burns have all played out wide for Ipswich in the last year, whilst Chuba Akpom is also capable of cutting in from the left flank.
It's therefore perhaps a surprise that McKenna is looking at both Walle Egeli and McAteer - there may be room for one of those players, but if both were to sign on the dotted line at Portman Road, then there would be a lack of game-time for at least one attacking Ipswich individual.
Given Leicester's lack of depth too, you'd be surprised if they were happy to cash in on the Ireland international, but if it helps to give them funds for some late new signings, then Marti Cifuentes and co may have to let McAteer depart.
