Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess has revealed that he has undergone successful surgery on the facial fractures that he sustained during the club’s clash with Bristol Rovers.
The defender was withdrawn in the second-half of this fixture following a collision with Rovers forward Harvey Saunders.
Before picking up this injury, Burgess managed to show some real signs of promise for Ipswich during the opening stages of the campaign.
The 26-year-old helped his side claim clean-sheets in their clashes with Burton Albion, Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley by featuring in these fixtures.
Burgess also represented Ipswich in their cup meetings with Northampton Town and Colchester United in August.
In the absence of the defender last weekend, Blues manager decided to turn to George Edmundson and Luke Woolfenden for inspiration in the heart of defence against Sheffield Wednesday.
Having squandered a two-goal lead in this aforementioned fixture, Ipswich will be determined to get back to winning ways in League One when they head to Home Park to face Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.
Ahead of this showdown, Burgess has shared an update on his injury on Twitter.
The defender posted: “Surgery was a success, thank you to everyone involved from start to finish.”
The Verdict
This is unquestionably a positive update for Ipswich as Burgess will now be able to start his road to recovery
Whereas the defender is not expected to feature in this weekend’s meeting with Plymouth, he could play a key role in his side’s push for promotion when he is fit enough to play again.
In the five league games that he has featured in this season, Burgess has made 1.2 interceptions per fixture and has also won 3.4 aerial duels per match.
Currently averaging a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.85 in League One, the defender will be confident in his ability to deliver the goods on a consistent basis during the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
