PSV Eindhoven are looking to sign Ipswich Town's Jack Clarke ahead of the summer transfer window.
PSV are interested in signing Ipswich Town’s Jack Clarke after his disappointing first season at Portman Road.
The 24-year-old joined the Tractor Boys from Sunderland in the summer after an outstanding few years on Wearside, which included scoring 15 goals as the side reached the play-offs last season.
However, failure to go up meant Sunderland were always vulnerable to losing their star man, and that proved to be the case, with Ipswich agreeing a deal worth up to £20m for Clarke.
Clarke hasn’t been able to replicate his Sunderland form in an Ipswich shirt, with the winger having failed to find the net in 25 Premier League games so far.
It has been a tough campaign for Kieran McKenna’s men, who look nailed on to return to the Championship as they’re currently 12 points from safety with seven games to go.
And it appears Clarke could be offered an escape route, as Football Insider has claimed that PSV are looking to sign the winger.
They state the Dutch giants are preparing a summer move, with the update adding that Ipswich are seeking to recoup the money they paid for the attacker.
It’s unclear whether Clarke would be open to making the switch abroad, although PSV will be able to offer European football as part of the package.
Whilst it’s unlikely they will catch leaders Ajax in the Eredivisie, they are second as it stands, which would bring qualification to the Champions League.
There’s no denying that Clarke hasn’t lived up to expectations at Ipswich in his first season, but a sale would still be a risky decision from Ipswich’s perspective.
We know that relegation means sales are required, but the Suffolk side are likely to receive £30m for Liam Delap, and there are other players who could be on the move.
In Clarke, they have someone who is proven at this level, as the former Leeds man was a class above most when he was in a Sunderland shirt.
So, it would make little sense for Ipswich to cash in unless they received a stupid offer, as Clarke is capable of getting the goals and assists to take the club back to the Premier League. Plus, he is under contract with the club until 2029, so there is no pressure to cash in.
Of course, if the player wants to move, it does change things, but it would be a shame for Clarke and Ipswich if his time at the club ended after one underwhelming season, as it does feel like he still has a lot to offer.
