Ipswich Town are within touching distance of a return to the top tier of English football for the first time in over 20 years, with the Tractor Boys in the driving seat as we reach the climax of a captivating Championship season.

Kieran McKenna has masterminded the rise of the Suffolk club from League One to the top of the Championship within 12 months, and stands on the brink of history at Portman Road as they battle it out with Leeds United for the final automatic promotion spot.

With the standards being raised across the board for the East Anglian side of late, there will be a number of players looking to leave the club this summer, regardless of whether they make it over the line in the race for promotion or not.

One of those will most likely be Gassan Ahadme, with the striker low on the pecking order for his current club, but the 23-year-old has proved himself to be a top performer for Cambridge United in League One over the course of the 23/24 campaign.

Gassan Ahadme impresses for Cambridge United on loan from Ipswich Town

The Moroccan has barely been given the time of day to impress his current employers, having made the move to Portman Road from Burton Albion in the summer of 2022.

After injury restricted him to just 54 minutes of playing time for the Suffolk side last season, Ahadme found himself on the fringes of McKenna’s first team plans ahead of the current Championship campaign’ opting for a move to the U’s in search of regular game time.

The move to The Abbey was one that reaped rewards for both player and club almost immediately, with back-to-back goals in his first two league appearances for the club seeing them get off to a flying start to the season, and would ultimately help keep them in the division once all was said and done.

Injuries have once again plagues the former Portsmouth man’s season, with a run of six goals in as many games before Christmas brought to a halt with a stress fracture of the foot, before returning to the fold in the final few weeks of the season to help his side retain their League One status.

Three goals across the Easter weekend saw him steer the U’s to victories against Barnsley and Wigan Athletic, before his final goal of the season helped ease them towards third tier football for another season, as they eventually finished four points above the drop zone.

With the fate of parent and loan clubs as they are, a return to The Abbey would be welcome news for United fans for the following season, with a return of one goal every two games proving his ability for finding the back of the net in the third tier.

With the likes of Nathan Broadhead, Conor Chaplin and Ali Al-Hamadi all helping Ipswich towards the top of the Championship, Ahadme won’t be making a mark at Portman Road anytime soon, and a summer move away from the club seems the best time to get the deal done for all involved.

Despite picking up just ten points in his eleven matches as United manager so far, Garry Monk did enough to keep his side in the league after Neil Harris’ departure for Millwall, and the former Swansea City boss will have a summer of recruitment to aid his efforts for the following campaign.

Ahadme’s scored four goals in his nine matches playing under the 45-year-old, and both player and manager would surely love the chance to get a full season under their belt together where they can really be unleashed on the division.

Gassan Ahadme Ipswich Town contract information

Ahadme still has a contract with Ipswich Town until the summer of 2025, having signed a three-year deal with the club when he joined from Burton Albion in the summer of 2022.

With the likes of Kieffer Moore and Omari Hutchinson [pictured] brought in on loan deals for the Tractor Boys this season, the writing looks to be on the wall regarding the Moroccan’s future at the club, with the East Anglian’s likely to cash in on their striker while they can.

With just a year left on his contract, this summer marks the perfect time for player and club to go their separate ways, with both likely to profit from a summer departure.

For Ahadme, the next move in his career will be vital; for a player with so much potential, he can’t risk another move like the Ipswich one where chances for first team football are scarce, and needs to go somewhere he is really valued.

Cambridge looks like the obvious choice for the striker; somewhere he is loved and appreciated, and a manager in Monk who fully appreciates what he brings to the team, and gets the most out of him every time he is on the pitch.

After going some way to earning United their place in League One next season, a return of Ahadme to The Abbey could see the U’s surprise a lot of sides in the 24/25 campaign.
