Inzaghi explains new Champions League issues: ‘More of a spectacle, more difficult’ | OneFootball

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has provided a detailed explanation as to why he and his players find the new Champions League format more of a challenge compared to recent years, but admitted that the newly-expanded competition is ‘more of a spectacle’.

Inzaghi explained during his pre-match press conference ahead of Inter’s upcoming game against Arsenal that facing eight different teams in the first half of the tournament, compared to just three in recent years, puts considerably more strain on his players and staff in preparation.

He also explained that it is difficult to predict where any team will finish in the league phase, and expressed his concerns about the fact that the final rankings could potentially be settled on the number of goals scored.

“It’s much more difficult for us coaches, even more so for the players,” Inzaghi told the press on Tuesday afternoon.

“Previously, you had to prepare for three teams, so until February those three teams were all you had to concentrate on, it was easier. Now you have to think about eight different games.

“Previously, after the first three games, you already started to have an idea of the ranking in your head. Now, you need to know the positions, how many points might be needed, but then the final placings could be decided on goals scored or conceded. “The team is aware of that, it’s probably more interesting, more fun, but also more difficult. It’s more of a spectacle, but it’s more demanding.”

Though Inzaghi feels the newly-formatted Champions League is more of a challenge for his team, Inter have enjoyed a positive start to the competition, picking up seven points from their first three games, including a 0-0 draw away against recent finalists Manchester City.

The Nerazzurri are currently seventh in the overall standings, which is enough to qualify for the knock-out stages automatically.

On Wednesday, Inter will be met by Premier League outfit Arsenal, who have an almost identical record in the competition thus far.
