Sorare is a fantasy football game which allows users to build their own collection of collectible digital player cards, setting fantasy lineups each week to compete with players on leaderboards to win rewards.

Sorare initially launched in 2019 for football, before expanding to basketball and baseball.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are among their brand ambassadors and it now has more than 600,000 active players.

Significantly, in January 2023, Sorare signed a partnership with the Premier League, with its new free-to-play draft game sending the platform into mainstream markets.

An Introduction to Sorare: Football

The concept of Sorare Football is a simple one: create your collection of player cards, set lineups each week in tournaments and win rewards including cards, money and match tickets.

There are two key parts of their Premier League offering:

  1. A free-to-play fantasy using common cards in their new Premier League draft game
  2. The NFT element of the game on the Blockchain (a secure digital record of transactions, typically relating to cryptocurrency) of purchasing cards with scarcity on the market to use in their pro competitions.

Players earn points based on their actions on the pitch, with a more dynamic scoring matrix than you would see in FPL, but similar to the wider scoring actions we typically see from daily fantasy football games.

There’s utility for defensive-minded midfielders like Manchester City’s Rodri, who is among the top-performing players in the game this season.

Bruno Fernandes and Bukayo Saka are also among the top midfielders.

Sorare scoring

Players can accumulate a score between 0 and 100, split into a decisive score and an all-round score.

The decisive score is based on direct positive or negative impacts on the game such as goals, assists, clean sheets, red cards, own goals and errors leading to goals.

Kieran Trippier leads the away among defenders – similar to what we’ve seen in FPL – with Thiago Silva, Ben Mee and Trent Alexander-Arnold also among the high performers.

Points are gained for shots on target, contests won, big chances created, accurate passes and interceptions won and deducted for fouls, errors leading to a shot, losing possession, duels lost and big chances missed.

We typically see wingers classified as forwards on Sorare, with the goalscorers in those positions typically outscoring number nines, who typically offer less all-round scoring on the pitch.

Riyad Mahrez, Marcus Rashford and Mohamed Salah are among the standout picks in these positions.

As well as player scores, cards can also receive a bonus score.

Captains typically receive a 50% scoring bonus and cards from the current season earn a 5% scoring bonus.

Cards can be trained to earn additional bonuses. Sorare cards can also accumulate experience points (XP) which can help level up the card, with a 0.5% scoring bonus for each level gained.

Sorare Draft Premier League Amateur

To get started on Sorare’s free-to-play offering, visit the website or download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, and complete the registration.

Click ‘Play’ to head to the tournament lobby and look for the ‘Premier League Amateur’, which is a draft-based game.

Initially, you’ll be asked to draft a squad of eight common cards including two goalkeepers, two defenders, two midfielders and two forwards, with an initial budget of 400 points.

You can have a maximum of two players per club.

The budget is based on the average of a players’ last 15 scores, so picking some low scorers who are about to hit a purple patch is advantageous here, with any profit gained on sale.

Users are then required to select a lineup of five players each week: one from each position, including a utility player, plus a captain who receives a 50% bonus.

Because of this, it’s best to select a strong five in the draft of eight and use as close to the minimum 40 points on the final three positions, to maximise the squad.

Managers are permitted a maximum of two card swaps per week.

Players compete in the overall leaderboard, with the top 200 players all winning a limited card from a tiered distribution.

There’s also score-based coin rewards to be used in the Club Shop to buy badges and banners.

In addition, Fantasy Football Hub is running a mini league, which kicks off alongside the weekend of FPL Gameweek 29 fixtures and runs to the end of the season.

The best-performing players in the league will win Premier League match tickets!

Sorare Pro Tournaments

As well as the free to play elements of Sorare, you can also buy cards with associated scarcities, trade with other users and use them in pro tournaments.

Playing Sorare through Fantasty Footbal Hub here means you’ll get free cards. It is recommended to hone your skills in the free-to-play draft games, to familiarise yourself with the format, before moving to the market.

Sorare uses Etherium within the crypto currency market for card trading. Start off slowly, be sensible with your deposits and put money in that you don’t mind losing – this market in fantasy football has a history of being volatile.

At the time of writing in March 2023, the market is in a low period, making it an advantageous time to buy.

Card prices have dropped across the board as users looked to utilise money invested in the game to shift to the Premier League offering.

Cards are classified by scarcity from limited, through to rare, super rare and unique, with purchase prices increasing as you move up the scarcity levels.

Cards are released each season, with extra utility of a 5% bonus for players for that current season. The cards are minted on the Blockchain.

There are 1,000 limited cards minted for each player, 100 rare cards, ten rare cards and one unique card.

These can be purchased on the market in new card auctions, listed on the market or traded with others.

Naturally, goalkeepers have an increased utility as there are fewer available and you always need one to create a lineup in any pro tournament.

It is possible to trade cards with other users but this is unregulated and other users can send unfair offers through, so be very careful when negotiating the trading area.

Some competitions are specifically for cards aged under 23, meaning players falling into that category bring a higher demand for their card.

There are several Premier League only tournaments available in the lobby, with the limited pro requiring four limited cards of different positions.

It’s not generally recommended to use Premier League cards exclusively in all-star competitions, as it’s considered that the high standard of the Premier League will lead to more condensed scoring compared to other leagues.

It’s possible to purchase cards and use them in many tournaments on Sorare, from Europe to the MLS.

Budget cap competitions utilising all leagues are also in the lobby, with winners taking home cash prizes for hitting a specific score tally.

If you use the Fantasy Football Hub affiliate link, you’ll get a free limited card when you buy your first five on the market.
