Inter’s improved defensive performances have played a key role in the Nerazzurri finding themselves top of the Serie A table, according to an Italian media report today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition highlighted that in the last six league games, Inter had conceded just one goal, a fortuitous deflected free-kick during their 3-1 win over Lazio two weeks ago.

In the first eight games of the season, Antonio Conte’s side conceded goals from open play at a rate of 1.6 goals per game and this has now dropped to just 0.4.

Inter also now very rarely concede goals from shots taken inside the penalty box, with such goals having dropped from 1.4 per game to 0.6 per game.

Conte received praise for the role he has played in the improved defence, which has helped Inter win 13 of their last 16 league games in Serie A.

Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni are all untouchable in Inter’s three-man defence, after a turbulent start of the season with injuries, suspensions and COVID-19.

Samir Handanovic has also returned to his best form, the report argued, now playing like the ‘real’ Slovenian after an error-strewn first half of the campaign.
