Inter midfielder Arturo Vidal has heavily criticised the referee of Chile’s final Copa America game where they were eliminated by Brazil, according to a report in the Spanish print media today.

As has been reported by Spanish newspaper AS, the midfielder that is known for his fiery temper did not hold when talking about a refereeing display that he feels was unacceptable.

“This game needed a serious referee, not one who wanted to be a clown. We gave everything and we missed the goal, but if the referee is there he won’t let you play and wants to be the master of the show it’s difficult. I’m sad, because we deserved more.”

Chile were eliminated from the South American competition by Lucas Paqueta’s goal just after half-time, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat. Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus was sent off immediately after the goal for a high-footed challenge that looked particularly dangerous.

Despite having an extra player for nearly the whole of the second half, Chile could not get themselves on level terms. Brazil will progress to the semi-final and Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez will head home to recover.

Both Inter players are being linked with moves away from the club as they are on very high wages.
