First-half goals from Leandro DamiĂŁo and EdenĂlson allowed Internacional to cruise to a 2-0 win over AmĂ©rica-MG and retake second place in the BrasileirĂŁo after Flamengo defeated Santos 1-0 earlier in the day.
With just four games to play, Palmeiras are still massive favourites to win their second title in three years. They remain five points ahead of Inter and seven points ahead of Flamengo.
América-MG, however, are in serious danger of being relegated. The loss kept them on 34 points, which means they are now in 19th place – four points from safety.
The match belonged to Inter from the very beginning, as they overpowered América with their pace.
Damião’s seventh-minute effort required João Ricardo to make a sprawling save, though the striker would score his 10th goal of the season soon after.
DamiĂŁo to score the game’s opening goal after EdenĂlson provided a fantastic through ball to give him enough space to hit the ball into the far corner.
Just before the half-time whistle, DamiĂŁo returned the favour by putting EdenĂlson through on goal to double Inter’s lead.
Inter goalkeeper Rodrigo Moledo made a pair of key saves in the second half to protect his team’s lead and give his side all three points.
Inter will now travel to Rio to face Botafogo on Sunday, while América-MG will host Santos in desperate need of a result.
