Interim boss Pierre Sage set to continue as Lyon head coach

According to L’Équipe, Lyon interim head coach Pierre Sage is set to continue in charge of the club for an extended period. The former Red Star coach is impressing the board at Lyon including John Textor following a run of much-improved performances including their first successive wins of the season against Monaco and Toulouse.

Sage was appointed as the OL interim manager following the sacking of Fabio Grosso. The former Frosinone boss now holds the unwanted record of the shortest managerial stint in Les Gones’ history. Under the World Cup winner, Lyon struggled for any form and found themselves languishing at the bottom of the table. In contrast, under Sage, OL have now moved from the foot of the table and out of the automatic relegation spots, and perhaps more importantly, are starting to win football matches.

As well as John Textor, new sporting director David Friio and chief scout Matthieu Louis-Jean would both be in support of extending the French coach’s stint in charge of OL. However, David Friio sees this opportunity as his chance to make his first big decision at the Groupama Stadium.

Genesio no longer an option?

Despite once being the favourite for the vacant post, contact with former Rennes manager Bruno Genesio has been limited since he was first approached and any potential appointment is at a standstill. David Friio would like to appoint former OM manager Jorge Sampaoli after their time together at the Stade Vélodrome. However, there has been no formal approach.

With a lack of movement on any new coach externally, barring any catastrophic result against Nantes on Wednesday, Pierre Sage should be confirmed as the new coach of OL.
