Watford attempted to bring former midfielder Moussa Sissoko back to the club during the January transfer window, according to the Watford Observer.

Sissoko joined the Hornets from Tottenham Hotspur last summer and scored two goals in 38 appearances as the club were relegated from the Premier League, captaining the side on many occasions.

He departed in July to return to his native France with Nantes, in a deal which was worth £1.8 million, as per The Sun.

The 33-year-old has been a regular for the Ligue 1 outfit this season, scoring one goal in 22 games in all competitions, with six of those appearances coming in the Europa League.

However, it seems as though Watford were keen to see him return to Vicarage Road, with the Watford Observer claiming that Sissoko was willing to take a pay cut in order to complete the deal, but the fact that Nantes were seeking a fee for his services proved to be an issue.

It was no secret that the Hornets were in desperate need of midfield reinforcements with a host of players currently out injured, including Imran Louza, Tom Cleverley, Dan Gosling, Tom Dele-Bashiru and Edo Kayembe.

They did secure the signing of Ismael Kone in January to ease the crisis, but right-back Mario Gaspar was forced to deputise in the middle of the park in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium, with Slaven Bilic’s options remaining stretched.

However, despite both sides supposedly wanting to make the move happen, they were able to get a return for Sissoko over the line before the closure of the window.

The verdict

Sissoko would have been an excellent signing for Watford.

He has spent much of his career at the highest level and he would have added experience and some much-needed depth to the Hornets’ midfield.

There may have been question marks over the his ability to cope with the demands of the Championship at 33 years old, but there is no denying that a player of Sissoko’s quality would be a huge asset in the second tier.

It remains to be seen whether this is one the Hornets will revisit in the summer, particularly if they were able to secure promotion when they may be in a better financial position to meet Nantes’ valuation.
