In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Sportiva, Inter youngster Matias Fonseca’s father Daniel Fonseca has shared his delight at his son’s call-up to the under 19 Italian national team. He also shared his disappointment about his son being overlooked by Uruguay.

“He has grown a lot in recent months and he deserves this. It does hurt me though as a Uruguayan that he is not being considered by the Uruguayan national team though,” he began.

“It hurts me to see a footballer like him who has scored so many goals this year and also been on the bench for the Inter first team not being called up by Uruguay.”

Fonseca, who played for the likes of Roma, Napoli and Cagliari during his own playing career, then went on to take a swipe at the Uruguayan football federation.

“They have called up several young players who have done much less than Matias has in Europe. Perhaps the internet does not work properly in Uruguay. The players who get called up are all children of friends of Oscar Tabarez.”
