An epic night. One of those forever memories, to tell your kids about, to relive. Inter earned their place in the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 final after a memorable battle against Barcelona, won 4-3 in added time in front of an electrified San Siro crowd. The 7-6 win on aggregate sends the Nerazzurri to Munich, where they will play to achieve their biggest dream.
There is one stat that sums up Simone Inzaghi's side's extraordinary path so far in the Champions League: in 14 matches, the Nerazzurri have only been behind for 16 minutes (in more than 1260 minutes, extra time excluded). The Nerazzurri were behind: in the final minutes of the game lost in Leverkusen, in the six minutes between Kane's goal and Lautaro's equaliser at San Siro, and in the six minutes between Raphinha's goal and Acerbi's goal in Inter vs. Barcelona. Our winning mentality can also be seen in our 26 goals scored in this year's Champions League: equalling the 2002/03 record.
Furthermore, the two-legged win against Barcelona is the semi-final with the most goals in the history of the competition, level with Liverpool vs. Roma in 2017/18. At last, in only the second time in our history, the Nerazzurri played in extra time in a Champions League game since the game against Atletico Madrid last season.
With qualification to the final in Munich, Simone Inzaghi guided Inter to their second Champions League final in three seasons. Only Helenio Herrera (three finals) has a better record as Inter manager, back in the Champions Cup. It is an enormous achievement, thanks to a path built on work, faith and a clear identity.
Lautaro Martínez continues to rewrite Nerazzurri history in Europe. With the goal scored against Barcelona, the captain reached nine goals in the Champions League this year, equalling Hernán Crespo (2002/03) as the best Inter goal story in one campaign of Europe's top competition.
Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, are his favourite opponents: three goals scored against the Catalans in the Champions League, showing his ability to shine on the most important of nights.
His crucial stamp and his cry of celebration are without doubt something that the fans will remember for a very long time. Francesco Acerbi scored a centre-forward's goal, worthy of applause, making himself one of the oldest scorers in Champions League semi-final history: 37 years and 85 days, second only to Ryan Giggs. It was his first goal in the Champions League. Experience, heart and leadership.
It was a massive goal from Hakan Çalhanoğlu that made him only the second Turkish player to score in a Champions League semi-final after Arda Turan in 2014.
Hakan, who is cold as ice from the spot, kept his perfect record going: six goals from six penalties in the competition, level with Timo Werner. A man to rely on.
