As most of the squad departed for Spain for a friendly against Real Betis, Inter striker Romelu Lukaku remained behind in Milan to work on his fitness.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Belgium international is not yet ready to feature for the Nerazzurri after returning from World Cup duty, and will continue on a personalised fitness programme at the club’s Appiano Gentile training centre.

Lukaku will be joined by fellow forward Joaquin Correa, as well as defender Danilo D’Ambrosio and goalkeeper Andre Onana in Milan, as they stay behind to work on their fitness.

The former Manchester United striker has participated in group training already though and is in line to face Reggina in a friendly next week, with Lukaku pencilled in for a 45-minute appearance against the Serie B club.

He is then expected to feature for at least an hour in the final warm-up match before the resumption of the Serie A season, as Inter take on Sassuolo in a friendly before Christmas.

Meanwhile, Correa has been given some time off to travel to Doha for the World Cup final, as his Argentina teammates face France tomorrow.

The former Lazio forward was initially included in Argentina’s squad before being forced to withdraw through injury, and so has been given permission to join his teammates for the final.
