Inter president Steven Zhang has shared his belief that technology and innovation are solutions to the crisis that the footballing world is currently dealing with due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is certainly a big change, but to solve the problems you have to analyse them one at a time,” Zhang explained as part of an interview during Italian news outlet Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport’s ‘SportLab’ event, as quoted by Italian news outlet FCInterNews.it.

“It is clear that budgets and earnings in the football world are affected, but in the long run, thinking about the next cycle, the next 3/5/10 years, I would say that technology and innovation are definitely the solution.

“People get passionate during the games and then keep talking about it. Videogames, social media or new sports that have emerged in the past decades of the last century.”

Next he was asked about how consumers can be further involved with football related products.

“Perhaps with products not strictly related to it, such as retail or lifestyle products. We need to collaborate with other digital contexts or new figures that have emerged in football, from TV rights to partnerships.”

The Chinese businessman then shared his pride at how things are going for Inter and what needs to happen in order for them to succeed.

“I am proud of the fact that we have always been at a high level. We have created a group, from the staff to the players through the management, who believed in our project.

“Our goal must be to spread joy and positive energy to people. To succeed we must be able to fight and win on the pitch, achieve success in terms of trophies and in the financial field which are the key things that we are working on.”

As a member of the European Club Association, Zhang was then asked about his stance when it comes to the possibility of the creation of a European Super League, something Inter are reportedly keen on.

“I am always in favour of the idea of improving and evolving our product. We have to analyse the current situation and our work after the pandemic which is often not suitable for consumers who have to wake up at six in the morning or even at three, it will be very difficult.

“For this we must present our skills to an audience that is able to take advantage of our offer, at any time and in the form you want, in any context. We will offer increasingly advanced and competitive products.”

Zhang, who is the youngest president in Inter history, recently celebrated his second anniversary as the president of the Nerazzurri club. He has been involved at Inter since 2016, when his father’s company Suning bought the club.
