Inter President Beppe Marotta admits Simone Inzaghi ‘wants certain things from the club’ in order to continue their journey together amid Saudi Pro League offers. ‘I am optimistic, because this run is not over.’

There were multiple reports over the last few days that Al-Hilal are prepared to offer Inzaghi a €30m per season salary in order to come to Saudi Arabia, which would make him the highest-paid coach in the world.

With the Nerazzurri preparing for their second Champions League Final in three years, questions will arise over whether he will remain at San Siro in case of another defeat.

Inzaghi referred to the rumours in his press conference today and you can read his comments here, but how did Marotta respond?

“It is a consideration every coach must make,” the President told Sky Sport Italia.

“It is only normal that he wants certain things from the club and we are ready to make him happy, as we said many times. Now we are all concentrated on an historic appointment for everyone, then we will sit down to discuss it.

“I am optimistic, because there is an excellent rapport with Inzaghi, this run is not over, there is a symbiotic relationship. I hope it can continue.”

The mood at Inter could be elated if they win the Champions League, but failure would mean ending the season completely empty-handed after losing the Scudetto to Napoli by one point and the Supercoppa Italiana Final to Milan.

“We feel positive and are proud to represent Italian football for the second time in three years,” added Marotta.

“This time, we are aware that we’re playing a main role, as the experience of the last Final in Istanbul helped increase our belief and motivation. I am optimistic it can be a great game.”

While Napoli could concentrate entirely on their Serie A results, Inter were stretched thin by European football and a run to the Coppa Italia semi-final too.

“Although we give great credit to Napoli, the fact remains we played 19 more games than they did, which is practically half a Serie A season, so it certainly affected the form of the team,” noted the Inter chief.

“I don’t like to look for alibis, so I can only confirm our gratitude towards these splendid lads, the coach and the club for all their hard work. We experienced epic nights like the victory over Barcelona.”

This will be the fourth Champions League Final in Marotta’s career, at the helm first of Juventus and then Inter, but he has never won.

“It would be an immense joy for me, especially as President now of Inter, to crown this phase of my career with a prestigious victory.”
