Inter had to survive a late drama to overcome Bayern Munich in a heavyweight Champions League quarter-final tie. Simone Inzaghi’s side pulled off a nerve-shredding 2-2 draw at the San Siro to reach the semi-finals as 4-3 aggregate winners.

A precious 2-1 win at the Allianz Arena last Tuesday eventually made the difference as the Nerazzurri kept their European drive alive. After a goalless first half, Vincent Kompany’s team took the lead through talismanic goalscorer Harry Kane.

However, Inter replied almost momentarily through star striker Lautaro Martinez, who netted his eighth Champions League goal this season. Then, Benjamin Pavard completed the turnaround with his first goal in the Nerazzurri shirt against his former club, opening a two-goal cushion in the aggregate scoreline.

Eric Dier restored hope for the Bavarians with an incredible header from an acute angle, setting the tone for a nail-biting finish. Yet, Inter repelled the German giants’ late siege to book a mouth-watering semi-final date against runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Inter (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer – 7

Kane’s trademark finish left him powerless on the goal line, but he looked confident throughout the rest of the match. Crucial save to deny Muller right at the death!

Alessandro Bastoni – 7

His surgical tackle denied Michael Olise a clear-cut chance and set him up for another faultless performance. He’s an absolute world-class!

Francesco Acerbi – 7.5

The veteran center-back’s aerial prowess and superb anticipation helped Inter fend off Bayern’s repeated crosses without breaking a sweat. Cornerstone!

Benjamin Pavard – 7.5

In addition to another stellar defensive display, the ex-Bayern star returned to haunt his former club with a thumping header that determined the fate of this tie.

Federico Dimarco – 6

Though his free-kick delivery led to Lautaro’s goal, the Italian wingback immensely struggled in defense and was slow to close down Kane for the goal.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6.5

Despite his age, Mkhitaryan’s understanding of the game, first-touch football, and commendable work rate stood out tonight, navigating Inter through Bayern’s relentless pressure.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 6.5

While his first-half rocket flew a whisker wide of the far post, the Turkish playmaker recorded a tie-deciding assist from the corner kick.

Nicolo Barella – 7

Inter’s midfield metronome showcased his class again. His impressive technique and ball distribution kept the home side’s midfield ticking over in tumultuous times.

Matteo Darmian – 6

Eric Dier’s last-ditch defending denied the experienced full-back only his second-ever Champions League goal. In spite of his attacking limitations, he was a genuine threat, especially in the second half.

Marcus Thuram – 6

Restless in high press and unplayable on the ball, the Frenchman demonstrated his qualities but failed to score when Inter needed him the most, sending a feeble effort straight into Urbig’s arms from point-blank.

Lautaro Martinez – 8

El Toro reminded everyone who he was with a phenomenal showing. The goal was only the cherry on top as the Argentine made Bayern’s defense look helpless with his clever movement and physicality.
