It was a huge day in Italy as Inter beat rivals Milan 1-0 in a thrilling Derby della Madonnina on Sunday.
Scorers: Lautaro 34′
A classic in Serie A, this clash featured a determined Inter side coming up against a lifeless Milan as the Nerazzurri claimed San Siro and inflicted misery on the reigning champions.
In the early moments, Simeone Inzaghi’s side looked eager to break the deadlock first and lunged forward quickly – it was clear they had a game plan set right from kick-off.
Milan goalkeeper Ciprian Tătăruşanu was kept on his toes as a result – making two saves to keep things deadlocked during the opening half an hour.
But the pressure was eventually too much when World Cup winner Lautaro Martínez continued his red-hot form and scored his 12th Serie A goal for 1-0.
After the break, Milan looked to find a response and brought on Rafael Leãao, Brahim Diaz and Alexis Saelemaekers yet Inter maintained control of the pitch.
The one boost for Stefano Pioli side was that Inzaghi’s men were sluggish throughout the second 45, as tempos slowed inside San Siro.
Milan subsequently had a handful of chances to pull level – the best when Leão turned on the afterburners and set up a wide-open Olivier Giroud, yet the Frenchman’s poor touch failed him.
By the end of the 90 minutes, Pioli’s side were still left stumped and finished the game with zero attempts on target as the lone goal decided the derby.
Inter sit second in the table, three above Roma, while Milan registered their third league defeat in a row and sit sixth.
