Inter need to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League at least to stand a chance of pushing themselves into the third pot for the Champions League group stage draw according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
Inter, despite finishing second in Serie A this season, currently find themselves in the fourth pot due to their coefficient rating of 36.000.
Inter must win their upcoming Europa League quarter final within 90 minutes to boost their coefficient enough to get them into the third pot without waiting until the end of the preliminary rounds. The report from the Milan based news outlet does however warn that Inter could be overtaken by many clubs, including four who won their national titles
It must also be remembered that if Inter are to go all the way and win the Europa League it would not only greatly boost their coefficient but it would also secure them a place in the first pot.
By being in the first pot, Inter would, in theory anyway, get a kinder draw than they have had in each of the past two editions of the Champions League and they could perhaps avoid coming up against another European heavyweight.
