Inter will have to make significant improvements from their performance in yesterday evening’s 2-1 win over Lecce if they want to fight for the Serie A title this season.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Il Messaggero, who argue that the Nerazzurri’s display against the newly-promoted team was nowhere near the level needed to reach their objectives and be competitive over the season to come.

Inter got the three points they came for from the Stadio Via del Mare, but there will be no illusions within the team that the manner of their victory was what it needed to be now that the preseason is over and competitive action has started.

The two points gained by Denzel Dumfries’s last-gasp winner could be enough to prevail in the Serie A title race if it ends up being as tightly-contested as it was last season, but the performance will not be enough to guarantee the points they need to do one better than they did last time around and win the Scudeetto.
