Inter Milan won’t push striker Marko Arnautovic towards the exit door, but will do everything to offload Joaquin Correa.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter are still considering what their attack will look like next season.
There is certainly no doubt that Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram will stay barring any genuine shocks in the last weeks of the transfer window.
And 32-year-old Iranian international Mehdi Taremi joins last season’s starting pair.
But in the case of former West Ham United and Stoke City striker Arnautovic, there is some doubt about what role he will play.
Arnautovic joined Inter last summer. The Nerazzurri signed the Austrian from Bologna in order to bolster the depth in attack.
Over the course of last season, Arnautovic was not a regular starter.
The 35-year-old did certainly did have his moments. But he was clearly behind Martinez and Thuram in the pecking order.
This coming season, though, Arnautovic could have an even less prominent role to play, however.
The arrival of Taremi on a free transfer from Porto gives Inter another potential starter in attack.
Taremi will certainly fight to have plenty of playing time.
And the Iranian has a relatively similar profile to Arnautovic.
Therefore, should the 35-year-old remain he will be very explicitly a backup option, there to play when the other forwards are out injured or need a rest.
Inter intend to meet with Arnautovic to discuss his situation soon.
The Nerazzurri will make clear to the Austrian that he is not likely to play regularly next season.
If Arnautovic is ready to accept that situation then Inter will have no qualms with keeping him around. They will not put any pressure on him to accept a transfer.
But if Arnautovic has any reservations about accepting a backup role then Inter certainly wouldn’t stand in the way of his seeking a transfer to a club where he would receive regular playing time.
On the other hand, former Lazio and Sevilla forward Correa is a player Inter will look to get rid of at all costs.
Correa is back at Inter for the time being following his disastrous loan spell at Marseille.
But Inter have made very clear to the Argentine that he does not figure in next season’s plans.
