Inter Milan Wingback Matteo Darmian: “Javier Zanetti & Maicon My Idols, Strike Vs Cagliari In 2021 Most Important Goal Of My Career” | OneFootball

Inter wingback Matteo Darmian feels that former Nerazzurri legend Javier Zanetti and Maicon are among the players to have inspired him most.

Speaking on the “Footsteps” series on InterTV, via FCInterNews, the 33-year-old also named his goal against Cagliari towards the climax of the 2020-21 season as the best of his career.

Darmian certainly has some big shoes to fill as far as fullbacks and wingbacks in the history of Inter.

Whilst the former Torino, Manchester United, and Parma has produced a high level of performances across his first three seasons at the club, he has hardly lived up to the standard of Zanetti and Maicon among others.

For his part, however, the 33-year-old feels that those two treble-winners are among the players who have had the greatest impact upon him.

Asked who his idols are, Darmian replied that “I’d have to say that in my position, Zanetti and Maicon are the ones, they inspired so many young players.”

The wingback also explained why his goal against Cagliari in 2021 is his favourite that he’s ever scored, noting that “It was an important goal in winning the Scudetto, against Cagliari at the San Siro.”

“It came from good play by Hakimi and Lukaku, and then I arrived at the far post,” he added.

“That goal saw us win the match and take one step closer to the Scudetto.”
