Inter Milan’s must-win match against basement boys Salernitana at Giuseppe Meazza on Friday will serve to get Serie A Matchday 28 underway.

Coming into this fixture, Simone Inzaghi’s men shared the spoils 0-0 in the first leg of their mouth-watering Coppa Italia semi-final tie against arch-rivals AC Milan.

Tuesday’s uneventful showing came as further confirmation of Inter’s recent downfall, as they head into proceedings winless in five consecutive games in all competitions (D2, L3).

Match Preview

Inter Milan

Since beating Venezia 2-1 in late January, Inter have alternated between draws and defeats across four Serie A outings, failing to get on the scoresheet in the last two in a row.

Before recording two scoring blanks against relegation-battling Genoa and mid-table Sassuolo, the Nerazzurri had only failed to score once in their opening 24 league matches under Inzaghi.

Inter’s drop-off in form, coupled with Milan’s wobble, has allowed Napoli to come from behind and regain control at the top of the Serie A table, as the Partenopei look to upset the Milan clubs in the title run-in.

After losing their last two Serie A home fixtures, the reigning Italian champions face the prospect of suffering three successive league defeats at Meazza for the first time since April 2019.

Salernitana Preview

A run of four scoring draws in a row represents an improvement, but Salernitana’s chances of ensuring Serie A survival look to be dead in the water already.

Davide Nicola’s men currently trail 17th-placed Cagliari by ten points, although two games in hand on the Sardinians give them a reason to dream.

But no team have won fewer Serie A points on the road than Salernitana (eight) this season, with only Genoa (28) conceding more away league goals than them (27) so far.

The Granata are the only side alongside Hellas Verona to have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their 12 top-flight fixtures on hostile turf this term.

Team News

After making a late cameo appearance in midweek Coppa Italia action, winter signing Robin Gosens could be in for his maiden Serie A start for Inter.

Along with the German wing-back, long-term absentee Joaquin Correa returned to the fold for Tuesday’s clash against Milan, so Inzaghi has his entire squad fit and firing again.

Salernitana are dealing with a major injury crisis, as Ivan Radovanovic, Matteo Ruggeri, Andrea Schiavone, Mamadou Coulibaly and Franck Ribery are all out with physical problems.

Inter Milan Potential Starting XI:

(3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Denzel Dumfries, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Hakan Calhanoglu, Robin Gosens; Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez.

Salernitana Potential Starting XI:

(4-2-3-1): Luigi Sepe; Mazzocchi, Radu Dragusin, Federico Fazio, Luca Ranieri; Lassana Coulibaly, Ederson; Grigoris Kastanos, Diego Perotti, Simone Verdi; Milan Djuric.

Prediction

Inter have no margin for error if they are to win back-to-back Serie A titles for the first time since 2009/10, and we expect Inzaghi’s side to have a walk in the park.

Anything other than that could spell disaster for the Nerazzurri’s topsy-turvy title defence.

Inter Milan 2-0 Salernitana.
