Jose Mourinho returns to Giuseppe Meazza to take on his beloved Inter Milan as Roma meet last season’s Serie A runners-up in a mouth-watering clash.
Neither side impressed on the eve of September’s international break as the last Serie A round marked the first time since 1995 that Inter, Roma, AC Milan and Juventus all lost on a single league matchday.
Despite taking the lead only a few minutes into their trip to Udinese via Nicolo Barella’s stunning free-kick, Simone Inzaghi’s side found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline at full-time.
An underwhelming result at the Dacia Arena marked Inter’s third defeat in five Serie A matches (W2), leaving the Nerazzurri five points behind the Scudetto pace.
Inzaghi’s future at Meazza has come to a crossroads after Inter’s poor start in Italy’s top flight, and Mourinho could be the one to drop the hammer on the former Lazio boss.
But things are not going Roma’s way either. Despite creating numerous clear-cut chances, they fell to a 1-0 home loss to Atalanta last time out, making it two defeats from three league outings (W1).
Following last season’s sixth-place finish, the Giallorossi are only one point adrift of the top-four pace as Mourinho intends to bring his team back to the Champions League this term.
Going into this fixture, Inter have racked up seven consecutive home league victories at home, keeping four clean sheets in that period, and could win eight on the trot at Meazza for the first time under Inzaghi.
However, there’s a piece of unwanted history up for grabs as another defeat would see the Nerazzurri lose four of their opening five Serie A games for only the second time.
Luckily for Inzaghi, his men boast an eye-catching ten-match unbeaten top-flight streak against Roma (W4, D6), their best run against the Giallorossi since World War II.
Roma’s form has been on a downward spiral, as the disappointing run of two defeats from their last three Serie A matches features as many losses as in their 21 league outings beforehand.
But the Giallorossi picked up a 2-1 triumph at bottom-half Empoli on their most recent Serie A travel, ending a torrid streak of three successive competitive away games without winning (D1, L2).
Mourinho’s men will have to tighten up defensively if they’re to win back-to-back away wins for the first time this season after conceding an average of 2.6 goals per match across their last five league H2Hs.
Inter Milan (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Matteo Darmian, Nicolo Barella, Kristjan Asllani, Roberto Gagliardini, Robin Gosens; Lautaro Martinez, Edin Dzeko.

Even though Inzaghi and Mourinho have plenty of firepower up top, both sides have found the goals hard to come by this season.
Therefore, we expect a cagey encounter, with the team to open the scoring likely to take home all three points.
And the recent H2H stakes suggest Inter could be that side.
