Inter Milan and Bayern Munich meet in the Champions League quarter-finals tonight, with the tie delicately poised ahead of the San Siro second leg.
It’s the leaders of Serie A against the Bundesliga table-toppers, with both sides brimming with talent. Ahead of the clash, we’ve picked out our Inter and Bayern Munich Combined XI.
Yann Sommer will be out to thwart his former team tonight. The Swiss shot-stopper was signed by Bayern as short-term cover for the injured Manuel Neuer in 2023, before moving to Inter Milan in a cut-price deal upon Neuer’s return. Last season, Sommer led Europe’s top five leagues for clean sheets as Inter won the Scudetto.
World-class in multiple roles, Bayern Munich’s decision to tie Joshua Kimmich down to a new contract was a smart one. Bayern’s best performances run through their German general, who leads Europe’s top five leagues for touches this season and tops the Bundesliga for chances created. He’s got 10 assists in all competitions.
Kim Min-jae has not convinced all at the Allianz Arena but continues to hold the fort in the absence of defensive teammates. Vincent Kompany’s system demands a lot from its centre-backs, with Min-jae’s speed and duel-winning important. He’s among the Bundesliga’s top players for progressive passes (6th), pass completion percentage (5th) and aerial duels won (9th) in 2024/25.
Inter Milan are arguably Europe’s best defensive outfit and Alessandro Bastoni is a key cog in Simone Inzaghi’s plan. Bastoni combines a towering presence with marauding runs forward and dangerous deliveries from deep areas of the pitch. He might just be Serie A’s best centre-back.
Inzaghi’s preference for a wing-back system has brought the best from Federico Dimarco. The Italian is a terrific outlet for Inter, with wicked deliveries and a goal threat from the flank. After an unorthodox route to the top, he’s now one of the best in the business.
Inter have become masters of the Bosman buy and Hakan Calhanoglu has been one of their finest free transfers. Snapped up from rivals AC Milan, the Turkey international has excelled as the deep-lying playmaker of Inzaghi’s side. Last season, he was named as Serie A’s Best Midfielder as Inter won the title.
Perhaps the epitome of what a midfielder should be. Barella can be all-encompassing at his best, charging from box to box with the technical quality to match his tenacious endeavour. He’s been named in Serie A’s Team of the Season in six straight seasons. A top-class operator.
Michael Olise has taken to the top level of European football with ease this season. Signed from Crystal Palace last summer, Olise has excelled in a Bayern Munich shirt. A wonderful watch, the Frenchman’s fabulous footwork and ability to make things happen have made him an instant favourite in Bavaria. No player has provided more assists in the Bundesliga this season (10).
Shifted slightly out of position to accommodate an all-start front pairing, Marcus Thuram deserves his place in this team – and flowers. A free transfer recruit, he helped fire Inter to the Serie A title last season and has been in even better form this time around. Thuram has eclipsed last season’s return with 17 goals in all competitions and has formed a superb understanding with Lautaro Martinez.
Inter’s talismanic captain scored a stunning goal in the first leg to underline his status as one of the game’s great goalscorers.
Martinez was the leading scorer in Serie A with 24 goals as Inter won the title last season, earning the league’s Most Valuable Player award in the process. In the summer, he top-scored as Argentina defended the Copa America and has reached 20+ goals in four consecutive club campaigns.
Harry Kane has averaged almost a goal per game since arriving at Bayern Munich. The England captain has netted 78 goals in 86 games for the German giants and was the recipient of the European Golden Shoe last season.
The 31-year-old will be the man Bayern look toward to turn around tonight’s tie.
