Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi could earn a spot back in the Italy national team with his recent performances.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Acerbi had been part of the Azzurri setup in the buildup to last summer’s Euros. However, he had to pull out ahead of the tournament after undergoing groin surgery.
And there was a sense that that would probably be the end for Acerbi in an Italy shirt.
The former Lazio and Sassuolo defender is now 37 years of age. And injuries have really started to catch up with him this season.
Therefore, Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti seems to feel that it’s time to move on.

However, Acerbi is not necessarily going to make it an easy decision for Spalletti.
Even now so far into his thirties, the Inter defender has been maintaining a very high level of performances.
Yesterday against Udinese, it was yet another highly assured display from Acerbi. He showed his top-level man-marking ability against Friulani striker Lorenzo Lucca.
Spalletti was on hand at the San Siro for the match. And Lucca was one of the main players who he was there to observe.
However, Acerbi’s performance will inevitably have caught the Italy coach’s eye.
And the temptation will certainly be there to give Acerbi a spot in the squad.
