Inter Milan are ready to stick with the core from last season rather than “revolutionizing” the squad.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note, however, that it’s not an approach without its risks.
Inter Milan came into this summer under a big cloud of uncertainty.
The disastrous end to last season stirred up the thought that big changes might be necessary.
That could have meant selling at least a couple big names. And, conversely, making equally big signings.
Davide Frattesi has been strongly linked with an exit for months. And had Simone Inzaghi stayed on as coach, it is almost a foregone conclusion that the Italian international would have left.
Meanwhile, Hakan Calhanoglu has been the subject of intense transfer speculation for over a month. Galatasaray are very keen on the 31-year-old.
Had Calhanoglu left, then Inter would have gone after Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

However, it now looks like both Frattesi and Calhanoglu will stay. As will all the regular starters from last season, give or take a couple of the veteran players perhaps departing.
Meanwhile, it is not as though Inter have not refreshed their squad. They have already made three signings.
But the Nerazzurri have largely focused on rejuvenating with young players. There hasn’t been a blockbuster signing like Ederson who would completely change the look of the starting eleven.
Therefore, Inter coach Cristian Chivu will have to refashion the Inter team using the same players who have now been stalwarts of Simone Inzaghi for multiple seasons.
That is not an approach without its risks. Complacency and a dark mood could set in as a result of last season.
But Chivu can try to put his stamp on the team. He has young new signings to work with, and to put pressure on others in the squad. And then, the arrival of Francesco Pio Esposito as an exciting attacking prospect.
Meanwhile, Inter are set to make at least one or two more signings. Most notably in defense.
Therefore, it’s not going to be as quiet a summer as last time around.
Inter fans who had hoped for a clearout and massive changes in the squad will be disappointed. But the club are backing the spine of their team to respond decisively to last season’s bitter climax under Chivu.
