Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni will play on the left of a back three for Italy in their Nations League clash with Israel.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They detail the likely tactical switch for the Azzurri in their second match of the break.
Bastoni is a player who has become absolutely pivotal for both Inter and Italy.
For the Nerazzurri, the 25-year-old is one of the first names on the team sheet, where he’s first-choice on the left of the back three in Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 system.
Meanwhile, for the national team, Bastoni has become a defensive leader. He has really stepped up following the retirement of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.
For the Azzurri, Bastoni has played in a few different formations.
At club level, the 25-year-old has proven to be perfectly suited to playing on the left of a back three. But he has shown more and more for Italy that he can grow into a role in the centre of a back four.
At the Euros, Bastoni played in a back four.
The Inter defender had an outstanding group stage, where he paired with Riccardo Calafiori.
And against France in Italy’s first of two Nations League fixtures during the international break, Bastoni played in a back three with Calafiori and Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
However, according to the Gazzetta, Italy coach Luciano Spalletti intends to switch things up for the next match.
The Azzurri face Israel tomorrow in another Nations League match.
And according to the Gazzetta, Spalletti will experiment with things at the back.
That means that Bastoni will return to a role that is familiar to him at club level. He will line up on the left of the back three.
