Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries decided to own his mistake which proved costly for the Netherlands who eventually suffered defeat against England.
The two European giants crossed paths in the semi-final of EURO 2024 in Dortmund.
The Oranje took an early lead through a wonderful strike from Xavi Simmons. However, Harry Kane dragged the Three Lions back rather swiftly through a spot-kick.
But while many considered the decision controversial, Dumfries had no complaints.
The Nerazzurri star admitted his mistake, as he clipped the England captain while trying to clear the ball inside his own penalty box.
“I take full responsibility for the foul. I tried to block the ball and instead took out Kane,” admitted the 28-year-old in his interview with NOS via FcInterNews.
“There was contact, although I didn’t do it on purpose.”
The result remained 1-1 until the 90th minute when Ollie Watkins came off the bench to deliver the winner for England.
Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij failed to intercept the shot which crept into the bottom corner.
Therefore, Dumfries expressed his despair after suffering elimination in such a dramatic fashion.
“Losing the match in this scenario is even worse. Had it gone to extra time, I think we could have won.
“I already had that feeling for the entire second half,” lamented the Dutchman.
England have now booked their place in the grand finale against Spain. The big showdown will take place in Berlin on Sunday night.
With the Netherlands now eliminated, Inter no longer have any representatives left in the tournament.
