Piero Ausilio has had a long journey as Sporting Director of Inter Milan.

And during that time, it would be fair to say that there have been many ups and downs.

The last few years have seen Ausilio form a formidable partnership with Nerazzurri President and CEO Beppe Marotta. The pair have been the architects of Inter’s successful transfer strategy.

Inter have pulled off no shortage of successful transfer deals during that time. All largely operating within tight financial constraints.

That does not mean, however, that the Nerazzurri have never missed out or failed to take advantage of opportunities in the transfer market.

Asked his biggest regret of his time at Inter, Ausilio named “not signing Kvaratskhelia.”

“But I’m not the only one who made that mistake,” the veteran executive noted.

“He was offered to a lot of big clubs in Italy.”

“It’s just that we played with a 3-5-2 shape,” Ausilio noted. “And he’s a player for a 4-3-3, so that’s why we didn’t sign him.”

Meanwhile, Ausilio named “Kovacic and Brozovic” as the deals he’s proudest of.

“And then Onana. We signed him on a free transfer and sold him for €55 million a year later.”
