Inter Milan’s pursuit of Genoa defender Johan Vazquez could lead to negotiations that are a “slow burn” over the coming weeks.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Inter’s search for a defender continues.
After missing out on Hellas Verona’s Juan Cabal to Juventus, the Nerazzurri are considering a few different options as far as a left-sided defender.
The Nerazzurri want to sign a defender who can play on the left side of the back three. They want someone who can back up Alessandro Bastoni.
Carlos Augusto frequently played in that role last season. However, this time around the Brazilian will need to play the vast majority of his minutes at wingback while Tajon Buchanan is on the sidelines with injury,
Zenit St. Petersburg’s Robert Renan is one serious target for Inter.
The Brazilian is twenty years old, which means that he would have margins to improve. That is a key facet that Inter owners Oaktree Capital are looking for.
But another name on Inter’s shortlist would be that of Genoa defender Johan Vazquez.
Vazquez is a player who has already shown that he can play on the left of a back three.
That is the system of play that Genoa used last season under coach Alberto Gilardino.
Moreover, the 25-year-old has a few seasons of experience in Serie A, with both the Grifone and Cremonese.
Therefore, Vazquez would certainly have the profile to slot into Inter’s back three.
And still in his mid-twenties, the Mexican international has the prospect to improve, as well as potential resale value.
Therefore, Vazquez is very much on Inter’s list of defensive targets.
The Nerazzurri have already done one deal with Genoa this summer. They have signed goalkeeper Josep Martinez from the Ligurians.
And moreover, forward Albert Gudmundsson reportedly is still a target for Inter.
Therefore, the channels of communication are certainly open between Inter and Genoa.
However, that hardly means that a deal for Vazquez will be easy.
Inter would prefer to sign the Mexican on an initial loan deal. At the moment, Genoa are not open to such an idea.
However, the Nerazzurri could aim to wait and see.
Over the course of the next few weeks, a move for Vazquez may open up.
But it’s not likely to speed up imminently.
