Inter Milan are close to extending Hakan Calhanoglu’s contract, with Nicolo Schira reporting the talks are in the final stage.

The Turkish midfielder’s current deal expires in 2024, and there has been intense speculation over his future.

However, the Nerazzurri have seemingly reached an agreement with Calhanoglu over a new four-year deal until 2027 with an improved salary of €6 million per season.

Calhanoglu has grown into a key cog in the midfield for Simone Inzaghi this season, bagging three goals and six assists in 36 appearances.

The 29-year-old has also been deployed in the deep-lying playmaker role more than usual this season with a greater degree of success.

The former AC Milan star has been pivotal behind Inter’s impressive run in the Champions League, putting in solid performances against Barcelona in the group stage while helping his side reach the quarter-finals, where they will face Benfica.

Despite incurring the wrath of Rossoneri fans upon his transfer to the arch-rivals in 2021, Calhanoglu has now become a fan-favourite at Inter.

Calhanoglu’s prominence has also coincided with Marcelo Brozovic’s strange decline this season.

The Croatian midfielder has been hampered by injuries this season, and his lack of form has put him under intense scrutiny.

The Nerazzurri are willing to sell Brozovic in the summer as they no longer view him as a valuable player to the squad.

As far as the contract extensions are concerned, Inter have also reached an agreement over a new deal for defender Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni could also follow suit.
