Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries opened up on protracted extension talks after penning a new contract last month.
During his latest interview with Dutch outlet Ziggo Sport via FCInterNews, the Netherlands international highlighted the significance of the economic aspect.
Indeed, the Denzel Dumfries on the verge of penning new Inter Milan contract renewal saga was one of the longest-standing soap operas in Italian football this year.
However, after months of negotiations, the reigning Scudetto holders finally tied the 28-year-old down to a new deal in November.
The former PSV Eindhoven defender put pen to paper on a bumper new contract, committing his long-term future to Inter.
But the Nerazzurri have handsomely rewarded their first-team stalwart for his loyalty.
Dumfries’ new deal ties him to Giuseppe Meazza until 2028.
For that, Inter have bolstered his wages significantly.
His annual salary has increased from €2.5 million net per season to €4m plus add-ons.
“It took a long time. Naturally, we had to wait for the new ownership to take over,” Dumfries said.
“We negotiated for a long time, but in the end, I am proud and happy to have signed here.
“I think it wasn’t easy for them, and it wasn’t easy for me either. This made things a bit difficult, and it took a bit longer than usual.
“We can go around it, but in the end, it’s also a matter of money.
“The club has always been good to me. In the end, we’re both very happy.
“I’m really enjoying myself, and my intention is to stay until 2028.”
Dumfries also discussed tragic scenes from Florence when Edoardo Bove collapsed on the pitch.
“It was a huge shock. We were discussing whether the ball had gone out of play on my cross because we had scored a goal, and then I saw him fall to the ground.
“At that moment, I understood the situation, and everyone reacted quickly.
“Luckily, today we have the confirmation that he is stable and doing better, which is a good sign.
“The most important thing now is that he is well.”
Finally, Dumfries explained his relationship with his former coach Alex Pastoor.
“He meant a lot to me. I think he mentally prepared me,” the Dutchman said.
“Apart from being my first coach in professional football, he taught me many things and introduced me to many concepts.
“He made me feel happy, and the lessons I learned under him still stay with me throughout my career.”
