In a recent report, Gazzetta Dello Sport mentioned that Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino has declined a move to Everton this month. It has been revealed that the Uruguayan midfield ace wants to play European football this season and has decided to reject a move to join the Toffees.

Vecino’s Limited Role At San Siro This Season

Vecino has played a sporadic role for Inter during this campaign as he has struggled to earn regular playing opportunities for them in Italian football. The 30-year-old has scored one goal in 15 matches for the Italian club this season across all competitions.

The Canelones-born sensation has seen most of his appearances come as a substitute which explains why he is only averaging 0.6 tackles, 0.4 clearances and 0.5 shots per game in Serie A. However, Vecino has distributed possession with conviction after completing 79.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).

Vecino Declines A Move To Everton: Big Blow For The Toffees?

Vecino is a moderately-paced midfielder who can make some intelligent runs with the ball when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the field.

The South American talent can get stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition at the centre of the park and is a good header of the ball as well. Furthermore, he has got a good work rate and can retain possession well for his team. At 30, the Inter outcast has still got a few years left in him to play at top gear.

Therefore, missing out on a midfielder of Vecino’s quality will be a massive blow for Everton this month. The Toffees need to add more quality to their squad following the recent sacking of Rafael Benitez.

The Uruguay international would have undoubtedly added some energy and dynamism to Everton’s midfield at Goodison Park. The Merseyside club will now have no choice but to switch their attention to a more viable target as they look to improve their squad during this January transfer period.
