Legendary former Inter Milan goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that the Nerazzurri are “well-stocked” in goal with Yann Sommer and Josep Martinez.
Zenga spoke to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews.
One of Inter’s big signings of the summer transfer window has been 26-year-old former RB Leipzig keeper Martinez.
The Nerazzurri’s plan for the Spaniard appears to be clear.
Next season, Martinez will go into the campaign as the backup option to Yann Sommer. The Swiss veteran had arrived at Inter last summer.
Far from it. The Spanish international will certainly be keen to push for opportunities as soon as he can.
And even if Sommer is to start out the season continuing on as Inter’s Number One, the arrival of Martinez will hardly be a bad thing.
Firstly, the competition from Martinez can push the Swiss to show his very best form.
Then, if Sommer is to miss matches through injury or suspension, Martinez should be able to cover very ably.
Former Inter keeper Zenga said that Inter are “well-stocked.” He noted that “We’ve already seen plenty of Sommer.”
“He has consistency and regularity, two vital qualities for a keeper to have.”
“It’s always difficult to keep producing the same standards,” Zenga said. “But just look at his career, you can be certain that he always stays on a straight line.”
“I must admit that when he arrived I was not very enthusiastic,” Zenga said of Sommer.
“But he’s shown the ability to be able to remain at a very high level. And to always be ready to make important saves – even if he’s only called on once or twice a match. That’s a big skill.”
“As far as Josep Martinez’s prospects, I’ll trust the Inter scouts who decided to sign him,” Zenga said.
“Even more than what we saw him already do at Genoa.”
The former Nerazzurri keeper called Martinez “A keeper with presence in the area, and who is good with the ball at his feet.”
