Beppe Bergomi believes Inter Milan will have to sign Morten Frendrup in order to balance the team if Ademola Lookman arrives.

The legendary former Nerazzurri captain gave his thoughts in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter Milan are pursuing Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman.

The Nigerian would certainly be the marquee arrival of the summer if the Nerazzurri can manage to pull the deal off.

And by all accounts, Lookman coming in would not mean that any of the forwards already in Inter’s squad would depart.

Therefore, Inter coach Cristian Chivu is reportedly looking to change the formation. He sees Lookman as ideal for a new-look 3-4-2-1 shape with three forwards on the pitch.

Bergomi: “Inter Need To Sign Frendrup To Accommodate Lookman”

Former Inter captain Beppe Bergomi noted that if Lookman really does sign, it would be “Thuram on the right, Lautaro up top, and Lookman on the left.”

“They need to figure out how to build a team around that,” the former captain warned.

“I’m not questioning his quality, obviously,” Bergomi made clear. “He’s scored over fifty goals in the last three years, and he’s one of the best forwards in Serie A.”

“But finding balance is crucial.”

“To get those three on the pitch at the same time, they need to change the composition of the midfield,” Bergomi argued.

“Under Gasperini, Lookman rarely dropped back to help out in defense,” he continued.

“And under Chivu, you shouldn’t imagine him playing on the wing. He’s a player who thrives in tight spaces, great at shooting on goal.”

“But in midfield, Inter are playing with number tens who have… adapted.”

“Particularly Calhanogu and Mkhitaryan,” Bergomi noted.

The former captain argued that “Frendrup would be perfect.”

“Running, the ability to get back and help out, tackling,” Bergomi summarized the Dane’s style of play.

“We need that type of player,” he argued. “At Genoa, in a two-man central midfield, he’s covered the entire pitch for two seasons in a row.”

“This would be the ideal profile for us,” Bergomi said.

“On a tactical level, it’s something to consider.”

“Furthermore, when you sign someone like [Lookman], a Europa League champion who’s hit double figures for three seasons in Serie A, he’s hardly going to be left out.”

“And neither are Thuram or Lautaro,” noted Bergmo.

“So I’d ask: Can you leave someone like Lookman can you bench him for two or three matches? For me, it would be difficult.”
