Inter Milan wingback Federico Dimarco has joined PSG and Morocco wingback Achraf Hakimi on an impressive attacking statistic for a defender.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note that the duo are the only two defenders to have both scored and assisted two goals in each of the past four seasons.
Dimarco won’t likely have been thinking about statistics as he celebrated his goal against Frosinone yesterday.
The 26-year-old’s effort from just past the halfway line sailed under the crossbar in what already looks like a “goal of the season” contender in Serie A.
A close comparison might be Alessandro Florenzi’s stunner for Roma in a Champions League clash with Barcelona the better part of a decade ago.
Certainly, Dimarco’s goal was no tap-in.
But in terms of the scoreline, and in terms of the statistics, they all count.
Whilst Dimarco is not likely to score from the halfway line very often, if ever again, the fact remains that he has made a habit of popping up with important goals for Inter.
This is not a new thing at the start of this season. On the contrary, the wingback has been scoring since his first campaign as a regular for Inter.
Whether direct free kicks or simple finishes from inside the penalty area, Dimarco knows where the goal is.
And the Italian international is also highly adept at turning provider.
Dimarco’s left foot has meant that he is one of the key sources of assists and creativity in this Inter team.
All of this means that Dimarco has both scored and assisted at least two goals in each of the last three campaigns under SImone Inzaghi.
And the wingback had been doing it before then. It was the same story in Dimarco’s breakout 2020-21 season with Hellas Verona.
This means that the Inter wingback has done something that almost no other defender has done in terms of consistent attacking production.
The one other to have already managed it will be a familiar face for Inter.
Wingback Achraf Hakimi had been a regular source of both goals and assists for the Nerazzurri on the right flank during the 2020-21 season.,
And the Moroccan has been doing it season on season for Paris Saint-Germain as well.
Only Dimarco and Hakimi can boast such a steady a record for both goals and assists over several seasons.
