Inter Milan have opened talks with Edin Dzeko over a new contract, according to InterNews.

The Bosnia & Herzegovina man’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the club are working around the clock to ensure they extend his stay at the San Siro beyond next summer.

Dzeko reportedly has interest from clubs in Major League Soccer, but InterNews reports that negotiations have moved rapidly and an agreement is imminent.

The former Manchester City and AS Roma striker wants a two-year deal, but Inter are offering just one year. However, both sides are expected to meet halfway by agreeing a one-year contract plus an option for a second.

The 36-year-old joined the Nerazzurri last year from Roma in a deal worth around €3 million, penning a two-year deal with the club.

The Bosnian has proven to be an important player for Inter since his arrival, scoring 26 goals and providing 14 assists across 70 appearances.

Since Romelu Lukaku’s return to the San Siro, it was expected that Dzeko’s playing time would reduce significantly. But after Lukaku’s injury, Dzeko became the main man for Simone Inzaghi’s side.

He has contributed nine goals and four assists in 21 games across all competitions and was pivotal in steering his side to the Champions League last 16.

Inter general manager had earlier stated that the striker’s performances for the club deserves a new contract.

He told Radio Anch’io Lo Sport: “He (Dzeko) deserves the renewal, he’s a great professional, and he’s attached to the shirt.

“Like so many ‘old men’ he has the vice of scoring. We will take this into account – our desire is to renew, but there must also be the explicit will of the player.”

While the veteran striker is seemingly keen on an adventure in the MLS, he is willing to wait and see what the future holds with Inter.
