Inter Milan have suffered a massive injury blow after Hakan Calhanoglu was forced off in the first half of Turkey’s European Championship qualifier against Croatia.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Turkish midfielder has injured the adductor of his right thigh and will return to Italy today to undergo medical tests.

With Milan Skriniar also sidelined with a back injury, Calhanoglu’s news is a massive setback for the Nerazzurri.

The Turkish midfielder has been one of the most consistent players in an otherwise indifferent season for Inter, becoming an indisputable starter for Simone Inaghi’s side.

The 29-year-old has also successfully adapted to the regista role this season, pulling the strings from the middle of the park with more quality.

Having grown in stature, Calhanoglu is now set to sign a new contract until 2027 with a significant pay rise.

The former AC Milan star’s injury comes at a crucial juncture as Inter enter a decisive April where they will face tough fixtures against Fiorentina, Juventus, Benfica and Lazio.

Inzaghi’s future depends on how he fares in those games, as his position is vulnerable following a lacklustre campaign in Serie A.

The Champions League quarter-finals against Benfica and the Coppa Italia semi-final against Juve are crucial to the Nerazzurri as these are Inter’s only chances to lift a trophy.

Inzaghi will turn to Marcelo Brozovic if Calhanoglu fails to recover in time.
