Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has delivered his verdict on a nerve-wracking 1-0 UEFA Champions League victory against Young Boys.
During his post-game interview with Prime, as reported by FCInterNews, the former Switzerland international assessed the Nerazzurri’s hard-earned success in Bern.
Playing on artificial turf was always going to be challenging for Inter.
On top of that, Simone Inzaghi made numerous personnel changes compared to the line-up that won 1-0 at Roma last weekend.
However, Sommer was among the rare first-team stars to have retained their place in the starting XI.
And the Swiss veteran proved decisive yet again.
Indeed, his sublime performance, highlighted by five saves, inspired Inter to another European clean sheet.
Remarkably, the Italians have registered three shutouts from as many Champions League outings this season.
Sommer’s contribution tonight was massive.
Amid Inter’s struggle to adapt to a synthetic pitch, the 35-year-old’s convincing display in goal made the difference.
Inter must have thought they’d stroll to another routine Champions League win after a 4-0 rout of Red Star Belgrade.
However, Young Boys gave the Serie A champions a run for their money.
“It was a tough match against an aggressive team that applied great pressure. These are valuable three points,” Sommer said after the game.
“They had several chances to score; it was tough. But we had opportunities too, including the missed penalty.
“In the end, it’s a well-deserved victory.”
Marko Arnautovic made Inter’s life in Bern far more complicated than anticipated.
Indeed, he couldn’t score from the spot early in the second half as David von Ballmoos saved his weak shot.
But Sommer was supportive of his clubmate in the aftermath.
“Yes, it’s okay to miss a penalty; it happens.
“We need to stay united and keep playing until the end.”
