Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer will be keen to immediately bounce back from his costly error against Sassuolo in this evening’s Serie A clash away to Salernitana.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
34-year-old former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer had largely gotten off to a positive start to life at Inter.
The Swiss had arrived as the replacement for Andre Onana following the latter’s big money move to Manchester United. Therefore, there were big expectations on Sommer’s shoulders.
Former Ajax keeper Onana had been a key player for Inter last season. His saves were vital in the Nerazzurri’s run to the Champions League final, and he was a key cog in the team’s buildup play in possession.
But the Nerazzurri back Sommer’s experience to adequately replace Onana.
The 34-year-old has long had the reputation as being one of the outstanding keepers in the Bundesliga. Meanwhile at international level, Sommer has had some very eye-catching performances for Switzerland, including at the most recent Euros.
And at the start of the season, Sommer lived up to his reputation.
The former Bayern and Gladbach man made a few excellent stops to keep Inter’s run of clean sheets in the league alive at the start of the Serie A season.
And as with Onana, it was in the Champions League that Sommer really showed his value.
The 34-year-old made a string of saves to keep the scoreline down before Inter snatched an improbable equalizer away to Real Sociedad in their group stage opener.
The Swiss needed to do far better to keep out Nedim Bajrami’s goal for the Neroverdi. That striker was key in initiating their second half comeback victory.
Bajrami’s shot was virtually straight at Sommer, with the Sassuolo midfielder hardly having the best of angles.
But Sommer allowed it in, almost through him, at his near post.
The goalkeeper was hardly the only player responsible for the defeat. But he certainly played his part.
Now against Salernitana, the Swiss will be hoping that he can instantly start re-establishing his momentum.
As Tuttosport note, Sommer will also be wary of the fact that Salerno was the site of one of Onana’s most difficult moments in his solitary season at Inter.
The Cameroonian had been responsible for letting Antonio Candreva’s late equalizer fly in in last season’s match at the Stadio Arechi.
Candreva had almost certainly intended his ball in as a cross. But then for all his brilliance in the Champions League, the Cameroonian simply let the ball sail over his head and under the crossbar.
