Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram responded to Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui in the Serie A title race with his hattrick against Torino.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Over the first couple months of the season, the race for Serie A top scorer is shaping up into an intriguing battle.
Last season’s top scorer was Inter captain Lautaro Martinez. But he has had a slow start to the campaign, with only his brace against Udinese to his name in the league.
Meanwhile, prolific strikers like Victor Osimhen, Ciro Immobile, and Olivier Giroud have left Serie A.
That has opened the door for other candidates. Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic would be a natural candidate, as would Romelu Lukaku, now at Napoli.
And then Alvaro Morata’s arrival at AC Milan has brought yet another accomplished marksman to Serie A.
But early on in the season there have been two strikers who’ve stood out above all in Serie A.
While Inter captain Martinez has not been prolific in front of goal so far this season, his strike partner has more than made up for that.
Braces against Genoa and Atalanta prior to the September international marked Thuram out as an early candidate for Serie A’s top scorer.
Then the Frenchman’s form quieted down a bit, however.
Thuram did not score in Serie A clashes with Monza, AC Milan, and Udinese.
Atalanta summer signing Retegui, meanwhile, started to catch up.
La Dea signed the Italian international from Genoa in response to a knee injury to Gianluca Scamacca. And he has been benefiting from the number of chances that Gian Piero Gasperini’s team create.
Retegui had scored four goals prior to yesterday. This is a testament to his lethal finishing ability and poaching instincts.
And playing against his former team Genoa, Retegui scored a hattrick in a 5-1 rout.
This took Retegui well clear of Thuram in the race for top scorer.
But that proved to be temporary. The Inter striker found the perfect way to respond.
Thuram scored a hattrick of his own against Torino. That means that he and Retegui are still locking horns at the top of the scoring charts in Serie A.
