Former Inter captain Samir Handanovic has taken up a new role at the club since retiring from playing at the end of last season.

The 39-year-old has had a scouting brief for the Nerazzurri. He has observed a number of players over the past few months.

And the focus of Handanovic’s scouting appears to be the goalkeeping position.

Naturally, the Slovenian has an expert eye when it comes to goalkeepers.

So Handanovic’s scouting appears set to have a prominent role in Inter’s strategy as far as the long-term future between the sticks.

At the moment, the hierarchy in goal is fairly clear at Inter.

Former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach veteran Yann Sommer is the undisputed Number One. And he has enjoyed a very impressive debut campaign for the Nerazzurri.

Meanwhile, Emil Audero is Sommer’s main deputy.

And Raffaele Di Gennaro is holding down the role of third-choice keeper.

But Inter could see some upheaval in the position in the not-too-distant future. Even in spite of the fact that all three of the above-mentioned keepers arrived just last summer.

Firstly, there is the matter of Sommer’s age.

The Swiss international is currently 35. He does currently look to be at peak form, and it is not unusual for keepers to play at a high level well into their thirties.

But Inter know that Sommer is not an option for the truly long term.

Inter Could Swoop For Both Michele Di Gregorio & Tobe Leysen

Then there is the question of whether Audero will be at Inter past the end of this season. The 27-year-old is currently only at the club on loan from Sampdoria.

The Nerazzurri have a purchase option worth €6.5 million to bring Audero back on a permanent basis at the end of the campaign. But there’s no guarantee of them exercising this.

So Inter are active on the goalkeeping front.

Two players who Handanovic has scouted this season are Di Gregorio and Leysen.

In the case of the former, the Monza keeper has looked to be one of the outstanding keepers in Serie A for a couple season.

That means that Di Gregorio would not come cheap. But Inter, who sold Di Gregorio to Monza, have a 10% sell-on fee on the 26-year-old, which would make bringing him back more financially feasible.

And if Inter were to offer Gaetano Oristanio as part of a deal for Di Gregorio, they may not end up spending much more than they would to pay the purchase option on Audero.

Then, the Nerazzurri’s plan would be to make Di Gregorio the backup to Sommer next season. This would be with a view to his inheriting the starting shirt in the longer term.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport anticipate, Inter would also consider 22-year-old Belgian Leysen to be a target – even in the event that they move for Di Gregorio.
